About Golf Course Architecture[]
Golf Course Architecture is the art and science of laying out and building a golf course. Its subfields include routing, agronomy, drainage, shaping and construction. It has had several eras including the Golden Age, the Dark Ages, and the Minimalist Revolution. Many of the world's greatest courses were built during the Golden Age by architects such as Donald Ross, Dr. Alister Mackenzie, Charles Blair Macdonald, and Seth Raynor. After the Second World War, notable architects including Robert Trent Jones, Tom Fazio, and Pete Dye came in vogue during the golf boom of the 1980s and 1990s. After the opening of Sand Hills Golf Club in 1995, minimalism became the preferred style among many golfers. Architects such as Bill Coore & Ben Crenshaw, Tom Doak, and Gil Hanse are among the most popular minimalists. Also popular over the last several decades have been signature architects, who are usually former professional golfers who employ trained architects to help design their courses. Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer have been among the most sought-after signature architects.
